What it is
The Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm is a K-beauty first-cleanse formula that starts as a solid balm and melts into a silky oil on contact with skin. It dissolves makeup, SPF, and the day's buildup without stripping, then emulsifies with water into a milky rinse that clears away cleanly. With 4.6 out of 5 stars across nearly 600 reviews, it has built a loyal following among dry and sensitive skin types who want a thorough yet gentle cleanse.
Who it's for
This balm is well-suited to anyone dealing with dryness, dehydration, or sensitivity. The rich, emollient texture leaves skin comfortable rather than tight after rinsing, making it a strong fit for normal-to-dry and dry skin. Sensitive types who react to high-surfactant or fragrance-heavy cleansers often find balm formulas easier to tolerate because the cleansing action is oil-based rather than detergent-based.
Those with very oily or congestion-prone skin may prefer a lighter micellar water or gel as their first cleanse. If you have known ingredient sensitivities, cross-reference the full INCI list before committing.
How to use it
Use this as the first step in a double cleanse, ideally in the evening when you are removing makeup or sunscreen.
- Start with dry hands on a dry face. Scoop a small amount with a clean spatula and warm it between your fingertips until it melts.
- Massage gently over the face in circular motions for 30 to 60 seconds, working around the eyes and lash line where product tends to collect.
- Add a small splash of water to emulsify — the balm will turn milky and lift debris to the surface.
- Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue.
Use nightly whenever you are wearing makeup or SPF. On bare-skin mornings, a single water-based cleanse is usually sufficient.
Key ingredients
The brand has not provided a detailed ingredient breakdown in our product data, so specific actives cannot be confirmed here. What can be said is that cleansing balms as a category rely on a blend of emollient plant oils and gentle emulsifiers. The oils dissolve oil-soluble substances — foundation, mascara, chemical UV filters — while the emulsifiers allow everything to rinse away with water rather than sit on the skin.
This formula is positioned to address dryness and sensitivity, which indicates the oil phase leans nourishing rather than drying and that common irritants such as high-concentration fragrance are likely minimized. Shoppers with reactive skin should verify the INCI list independently before first use.
Pros & cons
- Thorough cleansing without the stripped feeling that foam-only routines can cause
- Emulsifies cleanly, leaving less residual greasiness than straight oil cleansers
- Formulated with dry and sensitive skin in mind — two of the most common concerns among US shoppers
- 4.6/5 from close to 600 reviews is a reliable signal of consistent, repeatable performance
- Solid texture is easy to portion and holds up well for travel
- Full ingredient transparency is limited in our data — verify the INCI list if you have complex sensitivities
- Requires a second cleanse to be fully effective, adding a step to the routine
- The rich texture may feel heavy for oily or combination-oily skin, particularly in humid climates
- Always scoop with a dry spatula — introducing water into the jar can compromise hygiene over time
How it compares
The Living Cleansing Balm occupies the first-cleanse step, so it pairs with — rather than competes against — leave-on treatments. If you are building out the rest of a K-beauty routine for dry or compromised skin, the COSRX Snail Mucin 92% Face Moisturizer makes a logical follow-up: it delivers lightweight, barrier-supporting hydration after the slate is clean. For skin that swings between dryness and occasional breakouts, the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence layers well between cleansing and moisturizing without adding congestion.
The verdict
The Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm earns its high rating by doing exactly what a first cleanser should: removing makeup and SPF completely while leaving skin balanced rather than irritated. It is a considered choice for dry and sensitive types who have struggled with cleansers that over-strip. The main caveats are that it works best within a double-cleanse routine and that oilier skin types may find the texture more than they need. For anyone whose skin leans dry, reactive, or sensitive, this balm is a strong candidate for the first step of an evening routine.
What shoppers say
Shoppers consistently rave about how thoroughly this balm dissolves stubborn makeup and SPF, often ranking it above well-known competitors. The warm, citrusy fragrance gets frequent mentions as a genuine highlight, and several reviewers — including a licensed esthetician — note that a little goes a long way, making the jar last.
The main caveat is a noticeably oily residue that some find hard to rinse away, making a thorough second cleanse feel mandatory rather than optional. Those who skip makeup or prefer a squeaky-clean finish after a single step may find the lingering film frustrating.
I have tried quite a few oil cleansers in the last 6-7 years. This is the best one. Better than Farmacy, better than Youth to the People, better than Naturium, and better than any other japanese or korean brands I have tried. It removes difficult makeup and sunscreen in 60 seconds (that is how long I like to massage my cleansers in) and it feels so silky on the skin. It has a nice slip to it so i never feel that I am tugging at my face. It all melts into my hands as soon as I begin to rub them together. My biggest pet peeve with cleansing balms is that they never fully melt into my hands and i am left with big cleanser chunks between my fingers. That is not the case with this balm. It is perfect. It does not leave a residue either, if that is something you look for. Personally I never mind either way because Im going to follow with a regular cleanser right after. But this rinses of clean and leaves my face feeling soft. There is a very pleasant scent to this balm as well. I don’t find it too strong and it doesn’t irritate my skin, either. Finally, the price is a bit wild for the amount, but honestly, I truly think i will keep coming back because I have never used a better balm and I don’t believe i ever will.

Read on Amazon ↗I am a licensed esthetician, formerly in medical esthetics practices, and this cleansing balm is outstanding! It rivals the BEST cosmeceutical products and has become my favorite cleanser among them all! The balm removes every trace of eye and face make up, and lasts a long time (about 7 weeks). I have sensitive and dehydrated skin (leaning dry), and this was both non irritating and hydrating. I love the emollient texture. Does not leave a residue behind! I do a double cleanse with the balm, I just use it in 2 different ways. The first cleanse I use directly onto dry skin, rinse very well using a wet bamboo wash cloth and then second cleanse needs only 1/2 the amount as the first cleanse onto damp hands and damp skin. It completely removes every trace from first cleanse including sunblock, warterproof mascara and stubborn makeup. The balm rinses perfectly with no residue or tightness; just fresh and hydrated skin ready for next step. Love it! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! This will be EXCELLENT for all skin types no matter what the condition from oily to dry and everything in between. Skip the wash rags and get bamboo wash cloths for a GAME CHANGER skin care routine. You're welcome ;)
Read on Amazon ↗Since I started using Then I Met You Liovng Clransing Balm, I can’t wait to wash my face in the morning and keep checking the clock at night to see if it’s time to go wash my face before bed. I am truly obsessed with this product. First, it smells so good I can’t wait to open the lid. My delight only improves when my make-up melts away including my very difficult to remove mascara. It is very gentle on the eye area, and I can even open my eyes to check and see if it’s all gone or if I need to rub it in a bit more. There is no stinging whatsoever unlike every other make-up remover I have ever used. I also don’t get that weird blurry eye thing after I rinse. In addition, my face feels hydrated when I’m done rinsing but not oily. I have T-zone oily skin. I have been using for almost a month, and I feel I have barely used any product at all. My face loves it! I think the quality is amazing and it’s worth every penny - especially as it seems it will last for quite a while. I will not hesitate to purchase again.
Read on Amazon ↗Just tried this tonight and I am impressed with it. It smells great and seem to cleanse pretty well. I don’t normally wear make up so I didn’t have any to take off with it, but I did use it to cleanse my face after the day and then followed it up with my normal cleanser. It went on smooth and had a pretty even consistency, but I will say that it felt a little greasy/oily however it did not leave a weird residue on my face or anything like that. It had a decent amount of moisture to it so it didn’t leave my face feeling dry either. It felt like a good product.

Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm Makeup Remover: frequently asked questions
Is Then I Met You a Korean brand?
Yes. Then I Met You was founded by Charlotte Cho, co-founder of Soko Glam, and is rooted in Korean skincare philosophy. Products are formulated and manufactured in South Korea, drawing on the country's tradition of gentle, skin-barrier-focused cleansing.
What makes Then I Met You unique?
The brand is built around the concept of jeong—a Korean idea of deep connection—which informs its focus on slow, intentional skincare. The Living Cleansing Balm reflects that ethos: it's designed to dissolve makeup and impurities without stripping, making it especially suited for dry or sensitive skin types that react poorly to harsh cleansers.
How do you use the Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm?
Scoop a small amount onto dry fingertips and massage it over a dry face using gentle circular motions. The balm melts into an oil that lifts makeup, SPF, and daily buildup. Then add a splash of lukewarm water to emulsify it into a milky texture, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with a water-based cleanser for a complete double cleanse.
Do you apply cleansing balm to wet or dry skin?
Always apply to completely dry skin. Water activates the emulsification process, so applying to damp skin prevents the balm from properly dissolving makeup and sunscreen. Start dry, massage for 30–60 seconds, then introduce water to rinse.
Do I need to wash my face after using a cleansing balm?
For most people, yes—especially if you wear makeup or SPF. A cleansing balm is an oil-based first cleanser; following it with a gentle water-based cleanser removes any remaining balm residue and water-soluble impurities. Skipping the second cleanse can leave a film that may contribute to congestion over time.
What are common cleansing balm mistakes?
The most frequent errors are using too little product (you need enough slip to avoid tugging), applying to wet skin, and rinsing before fully emulsifying. Another mistake is skipping the follow-up cleanser and leaving oily residue on skin. Using cold water can also make the balm harder to rinse away—lukewarm water works best.
Is the Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm good for sensitive skin?
It's formulated with sensitivity and dryness in mind, making it a reasonable pick for reactive skin types that struggle with foaming or surfactant-heavy cleansers. That said, individual reactions vary—if your skin is prone to fungal acne or severe rosacea, review the full ingredient list before committing, as some botanical extracts can occasionally cause flares.
