What it is

The NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo is a two-in-one treatment that physically exfoliates the scalp while cleansing hair in a single step. It is formulated to lift excess sebum, product residue, and flaky debris from the scalp surface, clearing the way for a healthier-looking foundation. At 8.1 oz, it is a full-size format designed for consistent, routine use rather than occasional spot treatment.

Who it's for

This shampoo suits anyone dealing with an oily or congested scalp, stubborn buildup from dry shampoo and styling products, or flakiness that a standard shampoo consistently fails to clear. It is also a practical choice for those in hard-water areas, where mineral deposits accumulate at the root over time. People with a reactive or easily irritated scalp, active scalp conditions such as psoriasis, or any open abrasions should approach physical scrubs cautiously and check with a dermatologist before adding one to their routine.

How to use it

Apply generously to a thoroughly wet scalp before working the product down through the lengths of your hair. Use your fingertips to massage the scrub into the scalp in small circular motions for one to two minutes, giving the exfoliating particles time to do their job. Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a conditioner or hair mask concentrated on the mid-lengths and ends. Because a clarifying scrub removes more than a daily shampoo, limit use to once or twice per week to avoid over-stripping the scalp's natural oil balance. It fits naturally at the very start of wash day, before any leave-in treatments or masks.

Key ingredients

Hyaluronic acid is the standout active here, and its inclusion is more meaningful than it might first appear in a scrub formula. As a humectant, hyaluronic acid draws moisture toward the skin and helps retain it, directly counteracting the dryness and tightness that clarifying products — especially those with physical exfoliants — can leave behind. The result is a post-wash scalp feel that is clean without being parched, which addresses one of the most common frustrations people have with this category of product.

Pros & cons

  • Dual-action format exfoliates and cleanses in one step, saving time on wash day
  • Hyaluronic acid helps offset the dryness that clarifying formulas can trigger
  • Rated 4.6 out of 5 across more than 4,000 shopper reviews, indicating broad satisfaction
  • Generous 8.1 oz size for a specialty scalp treatment
  • Physical exfoliant particles are not appropriate for inflamed, broken, or highly sensitive scalp skin
  • Once- or twice-weekly use means it cannot replace an everyday shampoo on its own
  • Results depend on massage time and technique; a rushed application limits the exfoliation benefit
  • Not formulated to target dandruff caused by the Malassezia fungus, so it may not resolve that underlying condition

How it compares

If you want to get more out of this scrub without adding irritation, pairing it with the HEETA Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush with Silicone Tips is worth considering. A silicone brush distributes the exfoliating granules more evenly across the scalp and boosts circulation during the massage step, without the abrasion that fingernails can introduce. For scalps that also struggle with dryness after clarifying washes, following up with the Mielle Organics Rosemary & Mint Strengthening Hair Oil applied to the scalp post-rinse offers a complementary treatment that replenishes what the deep-clean step removes.

The verdict

The NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo earns its strong rating by solving a real problem with a practical formulation choice: it exfoliates and buffers against moisture loss in the same step. For anyone who has finished a clarifying wash feeling tight and uncomfortable, the hyaluronic acid addition is a genuine improvement over standard clarifying formulas. This is not an everyday shampoo and should not replace one, but as a once- or twice-weekly reset for a buildup-prone or oily scalp, it performs a focused, well-defined job. Avoid it if your scalp is reactive or broken, always follow with conditioner on your ends, and treat it as one part of a complete routine rather than a standalone solution.

What shoppers say

★ 4.6average from 4k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers dealing with scalp buildup, itchiness, and fine or thinning hair tend to love this scrub-shampoo hybrid. Many report noticeably cleaner scalps, reduced dandruff, and hair that feels softer and bouncier without the stripped-out sensation typical of clarifying formulas. Several buyers with menopause- or hard-water-related hair concerns found it genuinely effective and worth repurchasing.

A recurring caveat is dryness — a handful of reviewers noted their strands felt parched after use and recommend pairing it with a good conditioner. Those with already dry or very coarse hair may want to use it only periodically rather than as an everyday shampoo.

Amazing product

Wife's review - Having some recent hair loss, fine hair but full. Hard water with a softener treatment system new to us. Spoke to stylist during recent cut and she used "scalp cleansing" shampoo. Gently massage into scalp & through all your hair. Felt great but heavy on condition side made it flat. They also didn't sell the product at her salon - commercial beauty supply. Checked here and looked close over a few products. Saw this after reading all prior products scrolling. Bingo! I have fine hair. Stylist said only use scalp cleansing shampoo with exfoliant 1 time a week. When I initially opened it smells so good. Light floral not sweet overload heavy scent. She instructed small dab about size of nickel to start. It was actually all I needed due to the water softener & suds up well. Worked through scalp & all through my hair. The sugar exfoliating pieces are slightly larger than the product she used ( fine ground) but these exfoliating sugar pieces do a great job. Using styling products the soft water wasn't getting all the root lift, hair spray out of scalp or hair. I was amazed it was shiny the first use. Truly works great. Keeps scalp and hair clean, fresh feeling & free from product buildup and frees follicles being clogged from occasionally using multiple hair products keeping skin cells from washing away ( yucky) . This "scalp cleansing" shampoo truly works wonders. Love using it and just letting it air dry. Feels great. Shiny. One time a week. Life saver. Even 2-3 days after using it when regular shampoo, styling products, hair dryer & set spray my scalp feels great and my hair stays shiny. Buy it.

Just as good as super luxury, helps with menopause hair

I have had some hair loss due to menopause. I realized this was affected by my scalp, specifically, I was shampooing less and using dry shampoo and realized I might be clogging follicles. I decided to try this scrub to hopefully start fresh, and it is amazing. I have color-treated, fine hair, so I use this once a week with the matching mask. My hair feels luxurious, smells amazing, so shiny. For reference, I use Purology Hydrate as my usual shampoo/conditioner- and that is about the best on the market. This compares. In fact, when I run out of that, I am going to try the "repair" duo from this company to see if it is as good, as it costs significantly less. Try this, it is amazeballs.

Soft, clean, bouncy hair.

Just re-purchased. This shampoo is fantastic for fine, thin hair. Unlike most clarifying shampoos that feel like they strip your hair, which is what I thought I needed, this does not. It leaves my hair extraordinarily clean, soft and full of body and bounce. The conditioner is fantastic as well. This does not strip my hair color at all and smells great.

Good-bye itchy scalp!!!

AMAZING product! I have been using NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo for a little over 2 months and it has made a huge difference for my scalp. Prior to trying this I was experiencing itchiness--with no flaking or dandruff--all over my scalp, regardless of the weather, i.e. summer, winter, etc. I use gentle hair products, and this issue was becoming intolerable. I asked my stylist for advice. She suggested an expensive hair oil; but after researching other options I came across this scalp scrub & shampoo and decided to give it a try (along with a silicone scalp massager/shampoo brush). I've been using the scrub about twice a week, and no longer have problems with an itchy scalp. In addition, the scrub/shampoo smells amazing, lathers really well, and leaves my hair soft and manageable. Love it! Just one word of caution: be careful not to get it in your eyes, as it does burn.

NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo 8.1 oz: frequently asked questions

Which is better, a scalp scrub or a clarifying shampoo?

You don't always have to choose. NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean combines both in a single step—physical exfoliants lift dead skin cells and product buildup from the scalp while the clarifying shampoo base deep-cleans excess oil and residue in the same wash.

That dual action is efficient, but it can be drying if overused. Once or twice a week is typically enough for most scalp types.

Are scalp scrubs worth it?

For anyone dealing with flakiness, excess oiliness, or stubborn product buildup, a scalp scrub can genuinely reset the scalp between regular washes. NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean includes Hyaluronic Acid alongside its exfoliating ingredients, which helps offset the dryness that physical scrubbing can sometimes cause.

Pairing it with a HEETA Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush can help distribute the formula evenly and boost circulation during application.

What are the side effects of scalp scrubs?

Physical scalp scrubs can cause irritation or increased sensitivity if used too aggressively or too often. NatureLab.TOKYO counters this by including Hyaluronic Acid to help maintain moisture balance after exfoliation.

People with an already inflamed, broken-out, or very sensitive scalp should wait until the scalp has healed before introducing any scrub into their routine.

Who should not use clarifying shampoo?

Clarifying shampoos are a powerful reset, but they're not right for everyone. Those with color-treated hair, very dry or chemically damaged strands, or a sensitive scalp may find that frequent use strips moisture and lifts color faster than a regular shampoo would.

NatureLab.TOKYO addresses some of that concern with Hyaluronic Acid in the formula, but even so, people with fragile hair should limit use to once a week or less.

Does clarifying shampoo unclog hair follicles?

Clarifying shampoos cut through the layer of oils, silicones, and styling residue that accumulates around follicle openings. NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean goes a step further by pairing clarifying agents with physical exfoliation to help dislodge buildup directly from the scalp surface.

This can create a noticeably cleaner scalp environment, though no topical shampoo can medically treat underlying follicle conditions.

What shampoo is best for scalp buildup?

A 2-in-1 formula that both exfoliates and clarifies is often the most efficient approach to buildup. NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean tackles buildup on two fronts—physical scrubbing and clarifying surfactants—while Hyaluronic Acid works to keep the scalp from feeling stripped afterward.

It's best used as a weekly treatment rather than a replacement for your everyday shampoo.

Do dermatologists recommend scalp scrubs?

Many dermatologists do suggest occasional scalp exfoliation for people prone to flaking, excess sebum, or heavy product use, while advising against over-scrubbing on an already irritated scalp. NatureLab.TOKYO Perfect Clean is designed as a targeted weekly treatment, not a daily wash.

If you have a diagnosed scalp condition such as psoriasis or severe seborrheic dermatitis, check with your dermatologist before adding any scrub to your routine.
