What it is

The Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is a rinse-out deep-conditioning treatment built around the brand's signature argan oil base. It is formulated to restore moisture, reduce frizz, and improve manageability in a single weekly use. With more than 19,000 shopper ratings averaging 4.6 out of 5, it ranks among the most consistently well-reviewed prestige hair masks available.

Who it's for

This mask is best suited for dry, coarse, color-treated, or chemically processed hair that has lost moisture and elasticity over time. Curly and wavy textures that need extra slip and definition between washes will also benefit from the formula's richness. Fine or low-porosity hair types should approach with caution — a dense conditioning mask can sit on the cuticle rather than penetrate it, leaving strands flat or coated. If your hair tends to feel weighed down after standard conditioners, a lightweight leave-in is likely a better daily fit.

How to use it

Start with freshly shampooed, towel-dried hair. Apply the mask generously from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the scalp to prevent buildup at the roots. Work it through in sections for even coverage, then leave on for 5 to 10 minutes. For deeper penetration — particularly on very dry or damaged hair — apply heat via a warm towel or hooded dryer during that window. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the cuticle, then style as usual. Most users see the best results incorporating it once or twice a week in place of their regular rinse-out conditioner rather than in addition to it.

Key ingredients

Moroccanoil's defining ingredient is argan oil, cold-pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. It is rich in oleic and linoleic fatty acids along with vitamin E (tocopherol), a combination that smooths the hair cuticle, adds a lightweight shine, and helps reduce hygral fatigue — the swelling and shrinking that leads to frizz in humid conditions. Deep-conditioning masks of this type also rely on fatty alcohols such as cetyl and stearyl alcohol, which provide the slip needed for detangling and contribute to the soft, conditioned feel that remains after rinsing. These are conditioning emollients, not the drying alcohols sometimes found in styling products.

Pros & cons

  • Noticeably softer, more detangled hair after a single use
  • Argan oil base adds shine without a greasy or heavy residue on most hair types
  • Safe for color-treated hair
  • Large review base points to reliable, consistent results across many users
  • Flexible use — works as a weekly treatment or as a substitute for daily conditioner on very dry hair
  • Too rich for fine or low-porosity hair; may cause flatness or buildup
  • Noticeable fragrance — users with fragrance sensitivities should patch-test before committing
  • Not a scalp treatment; applying at the roots can lead to greasiness
  • Prestige pricing puts it above drugstore alternatives that use similar conditioning agents

How it compares

The mask addresses the hair shaft, but healthy hair starts at the scalp. If buildup or poor circulation is contributing to dryness and slow growth, pairing this treatment with the HEETA Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush at shampoo time can help lift residue and stimulate blood flow before you apply the mask. If you are already happy with your scalp health and want a lighter, leave-on complement to the mask for finishing or between washes, the Moroccanoil Treatment Hair Oil — the original product that established the brand — delivers argan oil in a more concentrated, non-rinse format suited to post-styling use.

The verdict

The Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is a well-formulated, dependable deep conditioner for hair that genuinely needs moisture. It delivers on the core promises of a weekly treatment: improved softness, reduced frizz, and easier styling without an overly heavy feel for the hair types it is designed to serve. The limiting factor is specificity — this is not a universal mask, and fine or low-porosity hair will likely be better served elsewhere. For dry, medium-to-coarse, color-treated, or textured hair, it is a reliable addition to a weekly routine and one whose strong review record reflects consistent real-world performance rather than marketing alone.

What shoppers say

★ 4.6average from 19.1k ratings on Amazon

Shoppers with thick, dry, color-treated, or frizz-prone hair consistently praise this mask for delivering genuine softness and smoothness after just one or two uses. Long-term fans say it rescues hair that feels like straw, tames stubborn frizz, and even helps work through serious tangles. The signature scent earns repeated compliments for being pleasant without being overwhelming, and most find a modest amount per application goes a long way.

The main caveat comes from those with finer or less porous hair, who find the formula on the heavier side and may experience weighed-down results. It is best suited for dry, coarse, or chemically processed strands rather than lightweight hair types that do not need intense moisture.

The BEST deep conditioner, and the only product that has ever worked for getting out huge knots in my daughter's hair easily.

I admit it...I'm in love with this product. I have very long, very thick, and very bleached hair that takes quite a beating from both the bleach and hot irons. Before I had MAJOR breakage products (seriously, it began to look like I had a 3rd grade boy's bowl cut from the incessant breakage around the crown). I knew I had to change, but wasn't quite ready to give up the platinum. This is where Moroccan Oil products come in. I threw out and said "buh-bye!" to my store bought shampoos and conditioners which had lots of alchol and sulfates in them, and switched to this product line. It can be expensive, but it's worth it. Your hair feels amazing after using it, and I've gotten incredible results. Here's how I fixed my hair: Forget regular conditioners. I use this intensifying mask in leiu of conditioners. It's VERY thick, and atfer shampooing I leave it on for about 5 minutes in the shower while shaving. As soon as you rinse it out your hair feels softer. Twice a week I will towel dry my hair a bit, coat my hair with this product, wrap/tie a towel around my head (or use a shower cap) and sleep in it, allowing it to fully penetrate the shaft. I don't shampoo it out, just rinse with water, and the softness is incredible. My hair used to look (and feel) like straw. Every stylist I have gone to in the past year have commented they cannot believe what amazing condition my hair is for being so long and bleached. I no longer have breakage, and I no longer have to wear extensions. It's now naturally the length my extensions were. My hair is prone to tangles. I also have a six year old daughter with medium length hair, and after a day at school and recess on the playground, she will come home with major knots. I use this as conditioner and it makes the BEST detangler EVER. Leave it on for a few minutes, and you barely have to navigate the knots- they come out on their own. Nothing else compares for this. I wish I could give it more than five stars- but what I can do is give my heartfelt, sincere recommendation of this product, wheter you're just looking for a good conditioner, attempting to get healthy hair back, or need a miracle way to detangle hair. This does it all. And the smell is divine!

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Hair Mask

Rich and Nourishing, But a Bit Heavy for My Hair Type I've been using this Moroccan Oil Mask for a few months now and overall, I'm impressed. It leaves my hair incredibly soft, shiny, and well-nourished. The scent is luxurious without being overpowering, and a little product goes a long way. That said, it feels a bit heavy on my hair, especially if I use it too often or apply it too close to the roots. I think it would be perfect for someone with thicker or more dry/damaged hair. For me, it works best as an occasional deep treatment rather than a weekly mask.

Best. Product. Ever.

I’ve been using the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask for a few weeks now, and it’s honestly made a noticeable difference in my hair. My hair type: Thick, slightly dry, and prone to frizz What I liked: • Immediate softness: After the first use, my hair felt significantly smoother and easier to manage • Hydration without heaviness: A lot of masks leave my hair feeling greasy or coated, but this one absorbs really nicely • Frizz control: My hair looks more polished and less puffy, even in humidity • Smell: The signature Moroccanoil scent is subtle but really pleasant and lingers just enough How I use it: I apply it to damp hair (mid-length to ends), leave it on for about 5–10 minutes, and rinse out. I use it about 1–2 times per week instead of conditioner. Things to note: • A little goes a long way—using too much can make fine hair feel heavy • It’s on the pricier side, but the results make it worth it for me Bottom line: If your hair needs moisture and smoothing without feeling weighed down, this is a great option. I’ve tried a lot of masks, and this one stands out for actually delivering noticeable results.

I really like Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Hair Mask, will buy again soon.

I have used this 3x thus far and its working really well for me. I haven't had a trim in awhile as I am trying to grow my hair out. I also wash and go to bed with wet hair (which I know is bad), but this has brought back the softness in my hair. I am really happy and will be buying again. I feel like it has a pleasant scent and my hair feels lighter. I also feel like it has made my hair less tangled / hard to brush.

Very good product

This product truly makes a huge difference. Worth every penny. I’ve been using it for years. My hair gets so dry and feels like straw and this smooths it out very well. I have extremely frizzy hair.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask: frequently asked questions

What is Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask?

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is a deeply conditioning hair treatment designed to restore moisture and softness to dry, coarse, or color-treated hair. It uses argan oil as a core ingredient alongside other nourishing agents to smooth the cuticle and improve manageability. It's a step up from a regular conditioner—think of it as a weekly reset for hair that needs more than a rinse-out can deliver.

How do I use Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask?

Shampoo your hair first, then squeeze out excess water so strands are damp but not dripping. Apply the mask from mid-lengths to ends—avoid the roots if your hair tends to get oily—and leave it on for 5–10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the cuticle. You can use a HEETA Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush during your shampoo step to prep the scalp before masking.

Do I use a hair mask before or after shampooing?

Use the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask after shampooing. Shampooing first opens the cuticle and removes buildup, which lets the mask's conditioning ingredients penetrate more effectively. Applying it to pre-shampooed, damp hair gives you the best absorption and leaves hair feeling clean rather than weighed down.

Do I need conditioner after using the Moroccanoil hair mask?

Generally, no—the mask is rich enough to replace your regular conditioner on the days you use it. Layering a separate conditioner on top is unlikely to add benefit and may leave finer hair feeling heavy. If your hair is extremely porous or damaged, a light leave-in is fine, but most users find the mask sufficient on its own.

Can I use Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask on dry hair?

You can apply it to dry hair as an intensive pre-shampoo treatment—leave it on for 20–30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse as normal. That said, the brand's standard direction is to use it on damp post-shampoo hair. The pre-shampoo method can work well for very coarse or damaged hair that needs extra conditioning time, but results vary by hair type.

Can I leave the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask on overnight?

Technically yes, but it isn't necessary and the brand doesn't recommend it. Leaving a rich conditioning mask on for many hours can cause over-conditioning—sometimes called hygral fatigue—which may temporarily make hair feel limp or gummy, especially on fine or low-porosity strands. A 5–10 minute treatment is effective for most hair types; very thick or damaged hair rarely needs more than 30 minutes.

What are the potential downsides of using the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask?

The mask is heavily moisturizing, so using it too frequently (more than once or twice a week) can leave fine or low-porosity hair feeling weighed down or limp. Some users sensitive to fragrances may find the signature Moroccanoil scent strong. If you want a lighter daily argan oil boost between mask sessions, Moroccanoil Treatment Hair Oil is a complementary option without the heavy conditioning base.
